Dave Spillman serves as ProGrowTech’s Vice President of Product Development. He oversees the company’s technical sales function, and leads cultivation, lighting and overall system design and integration, as well as the research and development of new LED products specifically designed for horticultural use.
An engineer by trade, Dave has first-hand knowledge of the many growth and efficiency struggles faced by commercial growers. He began working in the legalized cannabis industry in 2013, as one of the original founders of High Mountain Health, a leading medical cannabis grower and dispensary in Arizona that is respected nationwide for its commitment to utmost quality, efficiency and environmentally friendly practices. Spending more than three years researching photo science and the effects of different types of light on cannabis, he designed the cultivation site to operate like a factory, while implementing systems that would ensure a quality product synonymous with smaller operations. Dave spearheaded a scheduled production system supported by the building design, and then continued to refine the grow operation by devising and employing new technologies that would reduce production costs while increasing yields. He quickly realized that LED lighting was a critical component in achieving these goals, which led him to joining ProGrowTech, which created the first industrial-grade lighting tool specifically designed for horticultural use.
An embodiment of ProGrowTech’s “developed by growers for growers” philosophy, Dave continues to serve as operations manager at High Mountain Health, overseeing the commercial cannabis cultivation operation. This dual role allows him to be actively involved in pressing LED science to the limit, constantly evolving the technology to create better results for growers, while helping the company maximize efficiency while managing costs.
Early in his engineering career, he realized a desire to focus on smart building that would be environmentally friendly. With process engineering and material science at the cornerstones of his calling, he has married the world of design with environmental conscientiousness and efficient building, becoming an industry trailblazer. Focused on green building before it became a buzzword, Dave was president at Spillman Custom Homes for more than 21 years, where he designed and built high-end custom homes, as well as commercial construction projects to be carbon neutral before the concept became wide-spread. A member of the Arizona Green Builders Association, his work has earned him Green Building Award 2011.
Dave studied toward a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from California State University in Chico, and pursued both manufacturing and mechanical engineering at Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz. With a penchant for nature, he’s a student of the outdoors, as well. A Grand Canyon River guide for more than 30 years, Dave is also a commercial pilot, briefly running a small air charter business and member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He also sits on the board of the Flagstaff Alpine Ski Team.
